The Marcus Hale Method

Better training starts
with better questions.

What does your dog need? What feels difficult? How can you make the next step easier?

That’s the starting point of The Brain Trained Dog. A practical guide that brings behavior, learning, daily care, and play into the same conversation.

Look beyond labels like “stubborn.” Understand the context, teach an achievable skill, and notice what changes.

Inside the guide

Understand the why.
Know what to do next.

A book to read, practice with, and return to as your dog’s needs change.

01Understand your dog

Read body language in context, understand how learning works, and look at the daily needs that shape behavior.

Body language · Learning · Rest · Safe enrichment

02Teach skills for real life

Explore attention, loose-leash walking, recall, greetings, chewing, and housetraining. Find guidance for puppies, adolescents, older dogs, multi-dog homes, and everyday care.

Walks · Recall · Settling · Cooperative care

03Follow a flexible 30-day plan

Bring observation, practical training, and enrichment into a routine you can adapt. Repeat a step when your dog needs more time; the plan is a structure for practice, not a deadline for results.

04Care for the whole dog

Use the owner-care guide and field guide for common days to think through daily routines, changing needs, and when individual professional help matters.

05Choose from 101 enrichment games

Explore food and foraging, scent work, problem solving, cooperative skills, and social and environmental activities. Choose safe options suited to your dog’s interest and ability.

Also inside: a seven-day baseline, training records, an enrichment menu, outing checklists, and research notes.

The Sprinkle

An ordinary meal.
A moment of discovery.

Scatter a few pieces of your dog’s normal meal on a clean, safe floor while they watch. Let them search at their own pace.

Keep it easy. If they seem unsure, put the food in plain view or offer it in a bowl. Let them finish when they choose.

A thoughtful detailUse part of the daily food allowance, and separate dogs before scattering food in a multi-dog home.

The thinking behind the method

Observe carefully.
Teach kindly.
Adjust thoughtfully.

Marcus Hale Method is built around a simple idea: useful guidance should help you understand your dog and make your next step clearer.

The book draws on research while explaining its limits. It brings practical training together with rest, appropriate activity, safe choices, and attention to the individual dog.

Before you begin

A few good
questions.

Something else on your mind?
Get in touch

Is this a good place to start as a new dog owner?

Yes. The book begins with behavior, body language, learning, and everyday needs before moving into practical skills. You can read it in order or return to the chapters relevant to your dog.

Does it cover puppies and older dogs?

Yes. Dedicated chapters explore puppies, adolescence, and the older dog’s changing needs. The emphasis is on adjusting the task and environment to the dog in front of you.

Do I need to complete the plan in exactly 30 days?

No. The plan is flexible. You may repeat a step or take longer when your dog needs it. Progress is measured in observable behavior and comfort, not a deadline.

Do I need special equipment for the games?

Many activities start with ordinary food, a comfortable space, and simple materials. Read the safety guidance first, supervise activities, and choose materials appropriate for your dog. Not every homemade puzzle is suitable for every dog.

Can the book replace individual professional help?

No. This is an educational guide, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan. Sudden behavior changes, pain, aggression, severe fear, or panic when left alone need appropriate veterinary or qualified behavior support.
